In a group of people are you always the first to start sweating? And smelling? Do you feel like you sweat more than others?  Would you like to know why?

Why Do I Sweat So Much?

The simple answer is that some people just sweat more than others.  However, there are also some medical conditions like Menopause, Thyroid problems, Diabetes, Alcoholism, and Cancer that can cause excessive sweating. :

If you’re concerned about excessive sweating, you should see a doctor. Also, keep in mind that certain medications like antidepressants and zinc supplements can cause excessive sweating.

But in all likelihood, if you sweat more than others you can thank your genes. You were probably just born that way.

What Causes My Body Odor?

Your skin has two main types of sweat glands: eccrine glands and apocrine glands.

Eccrine glands occur over most of your body.  They secrete a clear, salty sweat that helps the body to control body temperature.  This sweat is mostly colorless and odorless. And since it is higher in salt content it is less attractive to bacteria. That is why you usually don’t notice a smell from sweat on your forearms or face.

Apocrine glands are abundant in your armpits and they secrete a thicker milky fluid that bacteria love.  When bacteria break down this fluid the resulting compounds are responsible for the smell.

Why Is Body Odor Worse in Some People?

There are several reasons body odor can vary between people.

Foods –

Certain foods can worsen sweat odor. And since people eat differently, they may also smell differently.  The worst offenders are garlic, onions, broccoli, Brussels sprouts. Most of these foods contain sulfur compounds responsible for their odor. Alcohol is also

Medical Conditions –

Conditions like Ketosis or Ketoacidosis in which there is a buildup of ketones in the body. can have an impact on body odor. Ketosis can be the result of a low-carb diet where Ketoacidosis can be associated with diabetes.

Genetics –

Mutations in a specific gene have been discovered to create a condition called trimethylaminuria, which causes the body to be unable to break down a chemical compound called trimethylamine. Trimethylamine is what gives fish its fishy smell, and when it builds up in the body it’s released in the breath, urine and sweat, giving a person with trimethylaminuria a similarly fishy smell. The odor can be extremely disruptive to daily life.
